the series of unfortunate events

i honestly think if you haven't read this book series you should go in as blind as you can, but ill give a a little summery. the baudelaire siblings lose their parents in a fire, and are sent to live with their evil count olaf, who is dead set on stealing their inheritance. of course, there's much much more to it than that. but again, if you haven't already read it, just pick up the first book and give it a try, i promise it will hook you in immediately!

my grandpa introduced me to this series at a very young age, and i was immediately hooked. tbh, i'm just a short version of my grandpa, but that's another story. i don't think i've ever read a series like this one. there's something so specific about the writing, and the art, and the way the story unfolds that scratches my brain. this book series will genuinely always stay with me. my grandpa has the whole book series, and i hope i inherit it or something.

spoilers!! my favorite character is uncle monty! it seems like everyone forgets about him! he was one of the best caretakers in my opinion, like he really cared about those kids! he was such a good uncle :(. he also gives me a lot of gender envy. i remember his death DESTROYED me as a child, even though it was very very obvious it was going to happen. i plan to get count olaf's eye tattoo on my ankle one day!

BONE

author: jeff smith
genre: comics, graphic novel, fantasy, comedy, fantasy fiction
year: 1999

a graphic novel following the bone cousins. yes, they are little white cartoon humanoids, just role with it. after being booted from boneville fone, phoney, and smiley bone travel the desert before stumbling upon a map. after they are attacked by a swarm of locust, they find themselves lost in a village, where they are taken in by a women named thorn and her grandmother. the series is so fun, and slowly turns into a super compelling fairy tale story. this was actually one of my first memories of a girl in a story being a badass.

i found this series in the library when i was in middle school, and fell in love. this was my introduction to any sort of comic/graphic novel, and ive never found one i fucked with like this one. my grandma actaully bought me the whole series as a gift when i was younger, and its one of my prized possession tbh.

this book also has one of my favorite charecters, thorn. i was obbsessed with her as a kid, and i wish i could find some sort of merch of her. now that im writing this, i dont think ive met anyone else whose read these books. which sucks cause the story is really good, and comes together really well. not to mention how INCREDIBLE the art is.

they both die at the end

Mateo receives a phone call from death-cast, informing him that hes a decker, and he has twenty-four hours or less to live. after being introverted all his life, Mateo attempts to spend the time he has left getting out of his shell.

i cried reading this but i cry over everything lol. i do think it gets a bit overhyped online, but the book is really good! i think if you want a sentimental, shorter read, you should def pick this book up. adam silvera is such an incredible writer, def one of my favorite authors!

spoilers!! the different stories kinda confused me at first, but the way it unraveled was so seamless, the way everyone, in some way or another, connects. it ended up being very beautiful. i got a bit bored at times, but that happens. not all the characters drew me in, but that didn't really hurt my enjoyment that much. overall, this book feels very sentimental to me, and i enjoyed reading it!

the land of stories

author: chris colfer
genre: children's fiction, adventure, fantasy
year: 2012

alex and conner receive a book of fairy tales from their grandmother. after alex falls into the book, conner falls in after her, leaving them in real life fairy tale.

i was OBBSESSED with this book series as a kid. it was one of the first actual books i read, and i could NOT put it down. the art, the writing, its still one of my biggest sources of insperation. chris colfer has such a specific way of writing, and the way he mixes humor with this somewhat dark fantasy world absolutly blew me away. im so happy i got my hands on this series as a kid, the art stays in my mind to this day.

infinity son

emil and brighton are waiting for their birthday, the day they find out if they are a celestial or not. brighton wants to be a heroic spell walker, emil wants to be at home. but when emil gets in a confrontation after a protest, his powers manifest, throwing him into the middle of a war.

i fuck with this book series HEAVY. i love re reading this series, and honestly, its one of the only series i re read. i love adam silvera's writing so much, but this book series i feel is his best work. i feel like fantasy powers are always used in the same way, but adam takes it in such an intresting direction. the charecters drew me in straight away, and the world buidling is amazing. i love thinking about the world adam created in this book, i love it.

spoilers!! im obbsessed with the slight mix of body horror and superpowers, and this is one of the only series that uses that trope! i love seeing the way a superpower could take a tole on someones body. i dont just want badass superheros, i want to see what cost their powers come with.

the five stages of andrew brawley

author: shawn david hutchinson
genre: medical fiction, YA, queer, graphic novel
year: 2015
status: ☑
rating:

after losing his family, andrew brawley now lives in a hospital, haunted by the fog of death that looms over the building. then, rusty is rolled into the er. its a wholesome story that i feel accurately describes the fear of trying to reach out to good things.

i found this book in middle school and liked it quite alot! i really really like the combination of a normal novel and a graphic novel, its so intertaining!
i dont really interact with any sort of medical media or medical fiction, its just not that interesting to me, but i did really like this book! i found the charecters very relatble at the time, but now, i mostly think of the graphic novel parts. they really stuck with me i guess.
